I reject the idea that we are biologically destined for specific societal roles or castes. While we may label certain children as “gifted,” we often overlook the fact that most children are simply “average,” whatever that may imply. These children grow into average adults, yet even a person of modest intelligence can accomplish remarkable feats with little more than a strong work ethic. At least this was true before the total collapse of our societal order; that, however, is its own contemplation.
A man may reject the values impressed upon him during his formative years. He may see that his peers enjoy a better quality of life than his own. That revelation may take root and reshape his conception of who he is and what kind of life he chooses to live. The rejection of values instilled by nurture, ultimately remains a function of experience, not biological imperative..
I reject also any notion that children are born with a predisposition for violence and crime. I do not discount a genuine mental disease or defect that manifests as pathological behavior, but nobody is a born a murderer.
It was once a common movie trope to depict an inner-city youth, raised in the projects surrounded by street gangs and rampant abuse of social welfare services. He sees the kids from the uptown perp-schools with all their privilege and he chooses to reject the cultural malaise of his surroundings. Despite his extreme disadvantage, he works hard and studies to elevate himself to a better situation. He does this not because he was born with a “prosperity gene” but as a reaction to his experience, not his nature.
