That is quite a loaded question for somebody living in the United States, especially in 2025/2026. How have my political views changed? Perhaps a more useful question might be:
How have my views of the entire political landscape changed?
Do I currently believe that the adversarial two-party system of the United States is capable of executing the will of the American people, with liberty and justice for all?
No. I do not.
We embark on a social katabasis, descending into corruption, madness and violence. Do I believe we can emerge again, reformed as the land of the free and the home of the brave, as we so describe ourselves?
No. I do not.
I dislike the terms conservative and liberal as they have lost all meaning. Do I want a liberal dollop of mayonnaise on my sandwich, or only a conservative film, spread thin across the surface of the bread? That used to be the way we thought about policy: in terms of the size of the government apparatus and its spending of taxpayer dollars. Now these words are attached to bizarre culture war ideologies.
I can only say that although I have less tolerance today for certain ideas than I might have when I was younger, I have always believed in civil liberties and I certainly don’t abide lies or political violence.
I don’t want to see our culture abandon all decency and morality. But I also don’t want to see any one perspective define what that morality is; especially certain American Evangelicals who have weaponized the simple truth of Gospel against peoples they deem distasteful.
I think a genuine measure of “American Greatness” is found in the hopes of the people who dream of coming the United States to build a better life.
My political views haven’t changed. The political animals of my country have.
