I honestly cannot think of anything I would want to be named after me. Surely nobody would waste their time or money on something named for a nobody like me. I drove over a bridge named for David P. Grunkle. It’s not a tourist attraction. I wouldn’t pay a toll for the privilege of driving over it just to associate myself with David P. Grunkle. Who even was he?
However, my deli sandwich order is so consistent that you could call it the Carlos Standard Club Sandwich. It is basically a classic turkey club, but served on a sub roll instead of 3 slices of toasted bread. It doesn’t matter if I’m at a Subway, a Jersey Mike’s, a Firehouse Subs, or whatever you have in your locality; my order will be the same boring sandwich every time.
Turkey with cheddar cheese and bacon on a wheat roll with lettuce, tomato and mayo. That’s it. Plain and simple — the Carlos Standard Club Sandwich. Ideally paired with potato chips. (Edit: I don’t even toast this sandwich, so I do think it’s better served with potato chips than with fries).
For the full “Carlos Standard Combo Meal” Add a cold glass of unsweetened iced-tea and a slice of apple pie (yes, with cheddar cheese).
If you want to memorialize me at the deli counter, then that’s my signature sandwich. Ask for it by name. Watch for a confused look as the man behind the counter asks, “Who’s sandwich?”
