There are a lot of things I used to enjoy that I don’t really do anymore. Maybe I’m just a fickle person.
I used to be an artist of sorts. It is, in fact, the vocation for which I went to school. I used to love drawing and painting. I was really into gouache and watercolors. In the mid-1980s, I discovered the airbrush, and I was excited to create with a new tool. Those were happier days for me.
I lost interest in artwork when the work of art became something to which I was obligated. I don’t do anything artistic anymore. I guess it’s true what they say:
One should never attempt to turn his passions into a career.
What other things have escaped my attention over the years? Well, let’s see…
I used to enjoy playing board games, but I haven’t played any in ages. I’ve talked before about our friend group shrinking over the years as people went to university, began their careers, got married, and started families. The board game gang just sort of drifted away.
I used to enjoy cycling, but my declining health has made that less practical. If I were more active, my health might be better, and conversely, if my health were better, I might be more active.
I also used to enjoy roller skating with the kids, but as they grew up, they developed other interests, the kind of interests that don’t involve Dad. It’s not something I was interested in doing alone. See also my note above about declining health making physical activities more difficult.
I used to enjoy going to the movie theater. We’ve seen some awesomely bad movies, but it was a nice excuse to get out of the house and maybe also have dinner with friends. That died during COVID and never came back.
