A Dinner with the Author, Silvia Moreno-Garcia.

Daily writing prompt
Which author would you love to have dinner with?

Which one author would I choose to have dinner with? I have obsessed over many novels and short stories in my lifetime, the authors of which all seem intensely interesting to me.

I guess we should limit the field to living authors, as dinner engagements with the deceased sound somewhat less appealing. Not to mention the conversation might be less intellectually satisfying than one might expect from a living writer. This still leaves quite a wide field of amazing authors from which to choose. Should I sort by genre? Or maybe I should think about which of those authors are geographically close to my location.

I actually do have an answer. Not to diminish any other author, but recently I have been reading a lot from the catalog of a particular writer. So, which author would I love to have dinner with?

Silva Moreno-Garcia. The author of well know works such as:

  • Mexican Gothic
  • The Seventh Veil of Salome
  • The Bewitching
  • Silver Nitrate (my personal favorite)
  • Velvet was the Night

Her characters always feel like they have depth that reaches beyond the scope of the story at hand. They have their own motivations, perhaps unknown even to the author. Her narrative prose is somehow both lush and efficient. I find that despite covering a wide thematic range, there is something singular about her voice that speaks to me.

I think I would enjoy talking with her about her inspirations over dinner. I don’t care if it’s fast food, fine dining or anything in between.
