Growth: Not Development or Maturity
One way in which I have grown this year? I think I know what you’re asking. You expect to hear about some way in which I have developed or matured over the past year, right?
Certainly I have acquired some new skills and knowledge this year. Also, I’ve gained a certain understanding and acceptance of my own solitary nature. I used to lament how alone I am in life, but in truth I actually prefer my solitude. Don’t think me to be some kind of misanthrope. I do love people and I do crave connection; just in limited measure.
Alas, this is not the answer I have for you today. The way in which I have grown most profoundly this year is: horizontally. I have expanded longitudinally. I’ve grown wider, fatter, and more rotund.
I wish this were not the case, but it seems my love for pizza and pasta has outpaced my metabolism, which appears to have slowed with age. I’m not really eating more than I did when I was younger, but what I do eat seems to be taking up permanent residence around my waistline.
