The Underpinning of All Modern Achievements

Daily writing prompt
The most important invention in your lifetime is…

It’s hard to judge the significance of all the inventions I’ve witnessed throughout my life. If we consider not only physical and material inventions but also techniques and procedures, it becomes impossible to single out any one invention as the most crucial development in the past sixty years.

If the life of your child was saved by an advance in surgical techniques; you probably think that procedure is a pretty important invention. To a person who’s life was saved by the successful deployment of an automobile airbag, then that also must seem like a pretty important invention.

However, the Internet has forever altered our society. Not only in terms of basic communications and commerce, but also in the research and development of pretty much every innovation in the wake of its adoption. The Internet allows real time global collaboration between all sectors of science, medicine, engineering and academia. What formerly took decades is now accomplished in months, sometimes days. Without the ability of bio-medical researchers to transport massive quantities of genomic data across both geographic and political boundaries, we may not have access to RNA vaccines, which are a significant invention in their own right.

The Internet changed the way we do pretty much everything. For the benefit or the detriment of our society (and often both) it is the underpinning of all modern achievements. The Internet is probably the most important invention of my lifetime.
