If I were to take a fictional creature as my lifelong animal companion, I would choose the cockatrice. Who wouldn’t want a clever little chicken dragon as an emotional support creature?
Yes, the cockatrice’s unfortunate tendency to kill people by touch, breath or even a glance might be … problematic in social settings. Fortunately I am by nature a solitary person. I don’t have friends who could fall victim to “the death-darting eye of Cockatrice”.
It should go without saying that I would have a natural immunity to the “charms” of my faithful and fantastical animal companion. If that were not the case I would have selected something a little easier to manage like the Oozlum bird.
