Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. It’s all about family and food!

What is your favorite holiday? Why is it your favorite?

My Favorite Secular Holiday Tradition

I think my I’m going to say that my favorite holiday is American Thanksgiving. That’s not some kind of “America first” position. If I were in Canada, I would have said Canadian Thanksgiving. I just wanted you to know that I’m aware of both holidays. But why is it my favorite? Family and food!

As an overtly Christian person, you probably expected that my response would be either Christmas or Easter.

Theologically, it is almost impossible to choose between these Holy Days. Perhaps my friends in Franciscan orders would say Christmas, because of the incarnation. Maybe my friends in Dominican orders would say Easter because of the resurrection.

If you’re a child, I assume that Santa Claus and presents under a tree will eclipse some rabbit and a bit of candy in a basket. Have you ever cleaned out a rabbit hutch? Santa may leave behind a few cookie crumbs, but the rabbit leaves behind … something else.

Aside from their theological significance, both observations usually include family gatherings and delicious meals. Since we have a secular holiday that is all about those two things, I don’t have to choose between them!

Yes, I know Franciscans and Dominicans are Roman Catholic orders. We have similarities in our observances even if we have differences in our doctrines.
