Shed a Tear for ‘The Namesake’, based on the novel by Jhumpa Lahiri.

Daily writing prompt
What’s the last movie that made you cry?

The last movie that made me cry? I am far too stoic to allow any movie to drive me to wailing and hysterical sobs. However I will confess to becoming just a little teary-eyed on occasion.

The last movie I specifically remember moving me to tears was The Namesake, based on the novel by Jhumpa Lahiri. That movie came out twenty years ago. If you haven’t seen it by now, I don’t think you really deserve a proper spoiler warning.

The scene in which Ashoke (Irrfan Khan) calls home from the hospital, choosing not reveal the gravity of his prognosis to his family, is heartbreaking.

That’s it. That’s all you get. I love this movie. I recommend it to anybody who will listen. I’ve been a fan of Jhumpa Lahiri’s writing for a long time. I was surprised to see a listing on IMDb for a 2026 television series based on her book Unaccustomed Earth, which I also recommend to you.
