For reasons unknown to me, my neighborhood is prone to electrical outages. It seems that even a stiff breeze is enough leave us in darkness for hours at a time.
I should clarify, we are current experiencing a blackout. I am writing this on my phone which is at 76% battery. I’m sitting in my car using the only car charger I had lying around. It is a “slow charger”.
Last night we had a fairly severe storm and now the entire block is once again without power. The electric utility estimates restoration or service in three days. I think this is ridiculous. Three days without power? It’s not as if the town has been destroyed. Sure, several homes were damaged by fallen trees, but this is by no means the kind of devastation you might expect from a category four or five hurricane.
I just went grocery shopping last night and now all of my frozen and refrigerated food will be lost. This is distressing. I can’t afford to replace these items. It actually makes me a little angry because I feel that the electrical utility must be aware how tenuous our power grid is. Frequently, when there is a service disruption, the map provided by the electrical utility shows that the affected area is localized to a row of just eight houses along a single city block.
So why don’t they invest the resources and manpower into correcting whatever deficiency exists here once and for all? In my opinion only irresponsibility or incompetence would allow this situation to continue. But, I’m not an electrical engineer so, what do I know?
