Now that Stargate Universe is over and there aren’t many other science fiction programs to watch, maybe I’ll actually have to watch some of those SyFy Channel original movies. The latest, titled “Red Faction: Origins” actually looks interesting. The movie is a tie-in to the popular Red Faction video game series by THQ and coincidentally debuts on the same day as the latest chapter in the game franchise “Red Faction: Armageddon”.
The film stars Brian J Smith from Stargate Universe, Kate Vernon from Battlestar Galactica, and Robert Patrick who you may remember as the T 1000 from Terminator 2: Judgment Day … and the last two regrettable seasons of the X-Files.
Many of the Syfy original movies are so campy as to be laughable. Do you remember mega python versus Gatoroid? (yes, I know I’ve mentioned that one before.) Given that it starred Deborah Gibson and Tiffany, two pop singers from the 80’s, you almost had to assume it would be a comedy. Red faction looks to be a much more sincere effort but then again it is Syfy so you just never really know.Maybe the new Battle Star Galactica series “Blood and Chrome” will actually bear some resemblance to the BSG that we all knew and loved; not another “Caprica”. I’m going to use Red Faction as a barometer for the future direction of Syfy original programming. If this movie is any good then maybe there is still hope for new programs in development or production.
In the meantime be sure to check out the Red Faction: Origins site over at Syfy dot com. The movie as well as the next chapter in the video game franchise both are scheduled to be released on June 7.
