Are you looking for a new anime series to watch? If you haven’t already, you should check out Knights of Sidonia (シドニアの騎士 “Shidonia no Kishi”).
After I finished Arpeggio of Blue Steel (蒼き鋼のアルペジオ “Aoki Hagane no Arupejio”) and Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-ne (輪廻のラグランジェ “Rinne no Raguranje”), I didn’t really have anything in my queue so I took to browsing the the Amazon and Netflix offerings to see what I might watch next. I had seen the title card for “The Knights of Sidonia” at least a dozen times on Netflix and hadn’t given it a second thought. After all, how good could an anime series be, when it’s a Netflix Original series?
I happened to see a video by WatchMojo, Top 10 Scariest Monsters in Anime, one entry on the list was Gauna, from the Knights of Sidonia. both the nature of the creature and the quality of the animation in the video clip were enough to warrant giving KoS a serious look.
Knights of Sidonia follows the last remnants of humanity struggling to survive aboard a “seed ship”, seeking a new world to inhabit after the destruction of Earth by a grotesque alien species called gauna. Sidonian military pilots are continually on alert, ready to be deployed on a moment’s notice. When called upon, these pilots fly robotic gaurde mecha to battle the deep space terrors which threaten the survival of humanity.
This series has some epic space battles along with the expected otaku fare. There are some fairly complicated relationships in this series both personal and political, nothing that will stress your brain, but enough to be both interesting and entertaining. Through genetic modifications and medical treatment some citizens of Sidonia are virtually immortal. Their longevity allows for plot twists based on events which occurred well over a century before the main events of the series.
If you like your anime with horrific monsters and space battles, this is a series for you.
