I was saddened to learn that the legendary actor John Hurt passed away a the age of 77. I’m not much of a eulogist. There’s nothing I can write here that adequately describe how significant a loss Mr. Hurt’s passing will be to the world of cinema.
Hurt’s career spanned some fifty years, encompassing every imaginable film genre. Some of his notable recent roles include
Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy,
Hell Boy and
V for Vendetta. Considering the breadth of his work this sampling of science fiction related roles encompasses only the smallest fraction of his credited work.
In addition to his on screen work, John Hurt also lent his distinctive voice to several notable films including Watership Down, The Black Cauldron, and a 1975 animated version of The Lord Of the Rings. Looking over his entry at IMDB will give you a better idea just how prolific an actor John Hurt truly was.
John Hurt was previously diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer but was recently given the all clear. According to an entry at Dark Horizons, Hurt contemplated is demise in a 2015 interview saying
… We’re all just passing time, and occupy our chair very briefly.
He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Anwen Rees-Myers. He will be missed.
