The Expanse gets a second season on SyFy

The Expanse has been renewed for a second season on SyFy. I was pretty excited to learn that SyFy Network ordered a second season of The Expanse, a series that, in its first season, served up a winning recipe of interplanetary intrigue with overtones of oppression and conspiracy.

The network must have been satisfied with the performance of the first season as they have increased the episode count from 10 to 13. That’s good because there aren’t a lot of good science fiction television series on the air anymore. Sure, networks pick up shows that have an element of science fiction, but not much “Space Opera” or “Hard Science Fiction“. It’s good news anytime a series like this gets a renewal.

The Expanse is based on a series of novels by James S.A. Corey (a singular pen name used by collaborative writers Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck). Currently there are six seven books in the main series:

  • Leviathan Wakes
  • Caliban’s War
  • Abaddon’s Gate
  • Cibola Burn
  • Nemesis Games
  • Babylon’s Ashes
  • Persepolis Rising

Additionally, there are a number of short stories and novellas set in The Expanse universe. I must confess that I haven’t read the entire series and therefore cannot comment on the accuracy of the adaptation but generally the first season parallels events from Leviathan Wakes. It seems safe to assume that the next season will draw largely from Caliban’s War.

The second season of the Expanse is expected to air on SyFy in 2017.
