We love love board games. There is special kind of social interaction that comes from sitting across from people and playing a tangible game; that on-line gaming just cannot satisfy. Our friend Myles recently introduced us to a new card-based game called Evolution.
Evolution is a game of species adaptation by North Star Games. Players select traits to help their species survive in an ever-changing world of limited resources and dangerous predators. Certain trait cards, like “Tall-Neck” allow the population of your species to reach foods beyond the reach of other species. Other trait cards provide defensive characteristics like shells or horns that make your species more resistant to predators. The game includes over 15 unique traits you can use to adapt your species.
I mentioned that Evolution is card-based. There is no game board That might be somewhat off-putting if, like me, you dislike deck building games. I can assure you that This is nothing like a deck builder. The mechanics are simple and very easy to learn. Turns consist of only a few phases. You may find some minor variation of the rules depending on what revision of the game you purchase, but essentially these boil down to Drawing cards, Adapting your traits, and feeding your population.
Evolution is incredibly fun for two to six players. The dynamic changes every time you play.
